Man,26, Remands Over Theft in Abakaliki

A Chief Magistrates' Court in Abakaliki, on Monday 26th September 2019 remanded in prison custody a 26-year-old man, Odanwu Ozoemenam 'm', for alleged involvement in armed robbery and an act of felony. 

It was gathered that the accused and others, now at large, committed the offense on Monday, September 9, 2019, at Ntezi village in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. 

The suspects and his accomplices were alleged to have robbed one Ozuma Ngozi 'f' of her Mp3 player, handset phone and the sum of N35,000, having armed themselves with a locally made pistol. 

The accused was remanded on two counts bothering on armed robbery and felony. 

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Mbam Chinedu, had told the court that the offenses were punishable under sections 516A (a) and 402 of Tue Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi  State of Nigeria, 2009. 

The charge  read, "That you Odanwu Ozoemenam 'm' and others now at large on the 9th day of September 2019, at Ntezi village, Ishielu LGA in the jurisdiction of this Honourable court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: Armed robbery and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

"That you Odanwu Ozoemenam 'm' and others now at large, on the same date and  place,  in the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, while armed with a locally made pistol did rob one Ozuma Ngozi 'f' of her Mp3 player valued at N4,500, phone valued N5,000 and cash sum of N35,000 only, totaling the sum of N44,500 and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 402 of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1 Law of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009."

According to the Chief Magistrate, Justice Nnenna Onuoha, The two accused persons should be remanded at the Correctional Centre Abakaliki (formerly Prisons), because of the nature of the matter. 

The case was adjourned till November 28, 2019, for report of compliance.

Man Convicts 7-Yrs For Pouring Acid On Lawyer In Ebonyi

BY MBAM EJIKE, ABAKALIKI High Court sitting in Abakaliki on weekend convicted Mr. Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substance on Chukwunonso Caleb Onwe Esq, a member of Abakaliki Branch of NBA and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine. In delivering the judgment in Charge No. HAB/151C/2020- State v. Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Hon. Justice I.P Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on 1/10/2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of Assault Occasioning harm. Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution counsel J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel thanked the court for doing justice in the matter. Similarly, the defendant' s counsel Odiegwu Ibekwe, Esq.thanked the court for delivering a well considered judgment stating that courts should always ensure that justice is done in all circumstances.
