Group lambasts critics of Ebonyi Lawmaker's wife appointment



A group, Democracy Vanguard, yesterday described as misguided the unwarranted criticism by some disgruntled elements against the appointment of Hon. Mrs Idu Igariwey, wife of the Member representing Afikpo North/South Federal Constituency, as a Senior Technical Assistant (STA) to Ebonyi state Governor,David Umahi.

Coordinator of the Group, Comrade Mba Franklin, in a press statement made available to Journalists in Abakaliki on Wednesday, said the group frowned at the characters behind the criticism, describing them as not only naive but are ignorant of what obtains in a modern democracy.

The group argued that Hon. Mrs Florence Idu Igariwey, is entirely a different person from her husband, and is entitled to every single right and privilege due to citizens of Ebonyi state which political appointment is not an exception.

They said the appointment of the Lawmaker's wife was not a political patronage as being insinuated, but entirely on merit, as she has been a staunch supporter of Governor Umahi and his administration and worked tirelessly for the Governor's reelection.

According to them, her appointment was purely the choice of the Governor and not her husband's.

They emphasized that even the Governor had reiterated in different fora that no appointment under his administration would be for political patronage, but based on his personal convinction that the person has the capacity to perform, and whereby the person fails to perform, Government would terminate the appointment.

They said it was wrong and mischievous for anyone to accuse the lawmaker of cornering the appointment for his wife; saying she is eminently qaulified to hold any political office offered her by Government.

The group further noted that Idu Igariwey who is serving his second tenure in the green chambers had been committed in bringing dividends of democracy to his consituents, including jobs and other sundry empowerment.

They urged the lawmaker to remain focused, and should not allow detractors and mischieve makers who are envious of his rising profile to derial him.

They also congratulated Hon. Mrs Idu Igariwey on his appointment, describing it as well deserved; just as they expressed confidence that she would use her new position to sustain her lifestyle of positively affecting lives of the needy.

Man Convicts 7-Yrs For Pouring Acid On Lawyer In Ebonyi

BY MBAM EJIKE, ABAKALIKI High Court sitting in Abakaliki on weekend convicted Mr. Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substance on Chukwunonso Caleb Onwe Esq, a member of Abakaliki Branch of NBA and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine. In delivering the judgment in Charge No. HAB/151C/2020- State v. Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Hon. Justice I.P Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on 1/10/2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of Assault Occasioning harm. Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution counsel J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel thanked the court for doing justice in the matter. Similarly, the defendant' s counsel Odiegwu Ibekwe, Esq.thanked the court for delivering a well considered judgment stating that courts should always ensure that justice is done in all circumstances.
