Student Remanded Over Alleged Examination Malpractice in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command, has remanded one Raymond Erick 'm', 18-year-old for alleged involvement in examination malpractice in the state.

He was arranged before an Abakaliki Magistrate's Court on a two counts ranging from examination malpractice and  felony, on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Bassey Okon, told the court that the suspect and others committed the offence on September 7, 2019, at Holy Ghost Foundation Secondary School, located at No. 1 Elias Odili Street, Abakaliki, in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the State. 

The accused and his accomplices were said to have conspired among themselves and induced one Abara Onyekachi 'm' to deliver Mathematics Examination Paper meant for General Mathematics 2, in the West African Examination Council examination, to confer unjust advantage to themselves. 

According to the Police Prosecutor, the offenses were punishable under sections 516 (A) (a) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 33 Vol 1, Laws of Ebonyi States 2009 and 39 of the Miscellaneous Offences Law, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2018.

The charge states, "That you Raymond Erick 'm' and others now at large on or about the 7th day of September 2019 at Holy Ghost Foundation Secondary School at examination hall situate at No. 1 Elias Odili Abakaliki did conspired among yourselves to commit felony to with: Examination Malpractices and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516 (A) (a) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 33, Vol 1, Laws of Ebonyi State 2009.

"That you Raymond Erick 'm' on the sane date, place and in the aforesaid magisterial district did by false pretence and with intent to cheat did induce one Abara Charles Onyekachi  'm' to deliver to you Mathematics Examination Paper meant for General Mathematics 2 in the West African Examination Council exams to confer unjust advantage to yourselves, an act which you knew or reasonably believed to be unlawful and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 39 of the Miscellaneous Offences Law, Laws of Ebonyi States, 2018."

Having listened to the charge, as  read out to the accused, Senior Chief Magistrate S.N. Ifeanyi Oyibe, granted the suspect bail, in the sum of N50, 000, as according to him, the matter was bailable.

The matter was adjourned till Friday, September 14, September, 2019, for hearing.

Man Convicts 7-Yrs For Pouring Acid On Lawyer In Ebonyi

BY MBAM EJIKE, ABAKALIKI High Court sitting in Abakaliki on weekend convicted Mr. Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substance on Chukwunonso Caleb Onwe Esq, a member of Abakaliki Branch of NBA and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine. In delivering the judgment in Charge No. HAB/151C/2020- State v. Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Hon. Justice I.P Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on 1/10/2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of Assault Occasioning harm. Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution counsel J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel thanked the court for doing justice in the matter.
