We Have No Market For Our Fish, Ebonyi Agric Commissioner Decry

--Govt Secures 3Billion for Farmers

 Ebonyi State Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Hon. Ogodo Ali Nomeh has bemoaned the non availability of off takers to patronize producers of abundant fish products in Ebonyi State.

 Chief Nomeh lamented that Ebonyi State has abundant fish products but lacked off takers who encourage the growth of the business in the area, urging the national body to introduce off takers to Ebonyi farmers as a way to boost the thriving industry.

 He made the call while addressing Executive members of National Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria,NFAN, at Enugu Sports Club, Enugu State during the South East Zonal National Workshop on Certified Fish Production and Processing , stating that fish been one of the most consumed agricultural products has many farmers in Ebonyi State but lack off takers which hinder the growth of the sector in the state.

 He noted that the state government through his office has secured three billion naira (3,000,000) for farmers who specialized in aquaculture, piggery and poultry farming.

 He emphasized that the state government in effort to stabilize food security has a lot of plans geared towards encouraging farmers which according to him targeted between one to two million farmers that would benefit from the loan.

 The agriculture commissioner, pointed out that one of the conditions for accessing the loan would be to have an off-taker , revealing that there's much money in Central Bank of Nigeria waiting for credible agricultural farmers which he said one of the criterias for meeting their needs were proper organizing of farmers, having a cooperative, and embarking on cluster.

 He promised to ensure that Ebonyi State fish farmers benefitted from the loan but insisted that while they give loan to genuine farmers that they would monitore the farm, whereby, they would show their farm and market to dispose the items to ensure the loan is paid back.

 The National Treasurer, Chief Chibundu Ubanwike, speaking on behalf of the Zonal president frowned on Enugu State government neglect of the programme despite huge resources invested in ensuring it is hosted in the state as South East regional headquarters but lauded Ebonyi State government for robust support and announced the relocation of the Zonal headquarters to Ebonyi State.

 The national vice president NFAN,Alhaji Usman Shetima, representative of the National President thanked the commissioner and Ebonyi State government for their interest in promotion of agricultural business in the state.

 Also Speaking, the national vice president South East, Mr. Mbah Iheanacho noted that the essence of the workshop was to prepare the processors on the necessary information needed as they would soon kick off the trade.

 In an interview, Ebonyi State NFAN chairman,Mr. Godwin appreciated the state commissioner for making the state proud, assuring him of their continuous support of Umahi led administration.

Man Convicts 7-Yrs For Pouring Acid On Lawyer In Ebonyi

BY MBAM EJIKE, ABAKALIKI High Court sitting in Abakaliki on weekend convicted Mr. Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substance on Chukwunonso Caleb Onwe Esq, a member of Abakaliki Branch of NBA and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine. In delivering the judgment in Charge No. HAB/151C/2020- State v. Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Hon. Justice I.P Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on 1/10/2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of Assault Occasioning harm. Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution counsel J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel thanked the court for doing justice in the matter. Similarly, the defendant' s counsel Odiegwu Ibekwe, Esq.thanked the court for delivering a well considered judgment stating that courts should always ensure that justice is done in all circumstances.
