Sports: Ebonyi Celebrates SWAN Week In Grand Style

BY NDUBUISI NWOGHA ANDY, ABAKALIKI Sports Writers Association, SWAN, Ebonyi State chapter today celebrated their annual week amid honouring distinguished Ebonyians who have contributed to sporting development in the state.
This was made known by the state chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Anike Nnaji during the briefing for the official Flagg off of the event at Pa Ngele Oruta township stadium, Abakaliki. Nnaji commended the national president Sports Writers Association of Nigeria,Sir Honor Sirawo for his contributions to the upliftment of SWAN in the country. The state chairman appreciated members unalloyed support to making the week a fruitful one and assured them of ensuring that new ideas would be entrench for better result. He emphasized on the importance of sporting activities to a journalist which according to him teaches discipline, commitment ,team work among others. He encouraged members not to only write about sports but also be practitioners as the exercise promotes mental and physical health. Nnaji however lauded the state governor, Engr David Umahi for his contributions in the sports sector and pledged their support to the promotion of the activities in the state. The state chairman earlier in his opening remarks said, "It is an absolute honor to welcome you to this long-awaited date and to also thank you for accepting our invitation and gracing the occasion. "This year's SWAN Week in Ebonyi State is unique because we will be honoring notable individuals who have created, and distinguished themselves in their various achievements in the field of sports and excellent contributions to raising the bar for future generations in the State and Nigeria as a whole. "A very warm salute to SWAN President, Honor Sirawo for working tirelessly to give SWAN a facelift in the Country and Internationally. Today members of SWAN in Ebonyi State and Nigeria can walk boldly without fear or intimidation. "It is difficult to navigate these past few weeks for our members in the State who are working hard and preparing for the main day. It is because of your affection and encouragement that we see ourselves in high spirits, even after such tiring days of making sure our week come reality "The annual sports SWAN Week is a tradition that started ever since SWAN was established in 1964. My heart is overjoyed to see such enthusiastic preparations by all SWAN members in the State who will be carrying forward the torch of sports drills. "I promise that every year the level of anticipation and programs will keep increasing. It will make us more excited to see what’s coming ahead. Sporting activities teach journalists many important life lessons. It teaches discipline, focus, dedication, hard work, commitment, and teamwork. "And it is our responsibility as SWAN members to value sportsmanship and award the courage of adults and students to take action rather than focusing on politics and amassing wealth. Sports instill plenty of values that help individuals to cruise through life with honesty and responsibility for themselves and others. "It also allows people to be agile and fit that only increases the concentration in whatever they do and the willingness to perform better in any field. Sport is an amazing concept that improves the lives of people. Students especially need to take part in sports that they find fun because participating in sports will not only help them to improve their physical health but will also give them the mental energy to cope and study well. "It will help them to stay fit and to have a healthy and positive life. Sports also play a very important role in having stable and healthy mental health. Mental health should not be taken lightly. To have a holistic and healthy life, people should also take care of their mental health. It plays a great role in keeping them happy and focused. "By physically playing various kinds of sports, people will also realize that they can focus and concentrate better in politics, business, and academic work. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the heroes who always work behind the scenes and make every event in SWAN Ebonyi State successful including this year's SWAN Week. Man Convicts 7-Yrs For Pouring Acid On Lawyer In Ebonyi

BY MBAM EJIKE, ABAKALIKI High Court sitting in Abakaliki on weekend convicted Mr. Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substance on Chukwunonso Caleb Onwe Esq, a member of Abakaliki Branch of NBA and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine. In delivering the judgment in Charge No. HAB/151C/2020- State v. Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Hon. Justice I.P Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on 1/10/2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of Assault Occasioning harm. Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution counsel J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel thanked the court for doing justice in the matter. Similarly, the defendant' s counsel Odiegwu Ibekwe, Esq.thanked the court for delivering a well considered judgment stating that courts should always ensure that justice is done in all circumstances.
